Roof installs (avoid)

Roof installations are not part of Sunny’s standard offering. Avoid recommending them. They’re expensive, hard to service, and they leak.

Why we don’t offer roof installs by default

Section titled “Why we don’t offer roof installs by default”

Servicing roof units is a nightmare. Any future repair, refrigerant top-up, or replacement requires roof access — which means more time, more risk, and more cost.

Roofs leak. Any penetration through a roof creates water-ingress risk over time, no matter how carefully it’s flashed.

These are the two reasons we don’t suggest roof installs at the sales appointment.

  • Outside walls first — driveway-side ideal. Avoids interior piping runs.
  • Side or back of house — second choice
  • Front facade — only if the homeowner is okay with the look (many aren’t)

See Site survey for the full unit-placement guidance.

If the homeowner truly wants units on the roof, it’s possible — but expensive. Required:

  • Third-party contractor to install channel blocks for mounting
  • Mechanical permit (because of the structural attachment)
  • Higher labor cost overall

This adds significant cost and time to the job. Make sure the homeowner understands the trade-off before you commit.

Most homeowners suggest the roof because they don’t want units visible from the street. The pitch:

“We can put units on the roof, but it adds about [cost], requires a third-party contractor for the mounting, and roof installs are harder to service in the future. A better option is usually [outside wall location] — we can route piping with covers if you don’t want it on the front of the house.”

Then walk them to the alternative location with blue tape.
