Hybrid — keep gas + add heat pump

Some homeowners want both: keep their existing gas boiler AND add heat pumps. This is a valid scenario.

This is a non-decommissioning job. The boiler is untouched.

  • No decommissioning bill
  • No mechanical permit (boiler remains primary heating source)
  • Electrical permit only
  • Not eligible for the Con Edison Clean Heat rebate or NYSERDA / EFS financing

See Non-decommissioning install for the full process.

Sometimes the homeowner asks: “Can my heat pump cool, but my gas boiler still heat, both controlled from the same thermostat?”

Sunny does not do these multi-fuel thermostat setups. It is technically possible but we don’t dabble in it.

  • If the homeowner already has separated thermostats for heating and cooling, they can use the new heat pump (or central air) for cooling only and keep their existing thermostat for heat
  • Each heat pump unit gets its own thermostat tied to that unit

See Central air — multi-fuel setups for more on the thermostat scenario.
